The origins of Arthur Edward Waite's tarot

Born in America in 1857, Waite was raised and educated as a Catholic in England. From the age of 21, Waite continued research and writing on psychic and esoteric questions. Shortly after he joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, he became its Grand Master and reoriented the attention of this assembly towards magic and mysticism. The Golden Order, whose structural hierarchy was based on Kabbalah, is considered the foundation that most influenced the 20th century concerning occultism and divinatory arts.

Waite was a prolific author of esoteric texts, works on the Holy Grail and the body of mystical knowledge, which constitute the basis of modern Tarot. He is also best known as the co-creator of the Tarot game Rider-Waite and the author of his complementary volume The Tarot Pictorial Bell, first published in 1910. The cards were drawn in 1909 by Pamela Colman Smith under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite. Smith's vibrant designs have modernized the standard Tarot set.
The unique feature of the Rider-Waite Tarot and one of the main reasons for its enduring popularity is that all cards, including minor arcanas, represent complete scenes with figures and symbols. Before the Rider-Waite Tarot, the Tarot cards of almost all games were marked only by the arrangement of figures, swords, wands, cups and pentacles.
